Observing that their peers were frequently misidentifying IAD as a Stage 2 pressure ulcer, the Resource Nurses provided additional education on differentiating IAD from a pressure ulcer. They also consulted the literature and conducted a chart audit that revealed that the method of making beds was contributing to the occurrence of IAD. The evidence was brought to the attention of the Nursing Evidence Based Practice and Research council, which approved the development of a nursing policy establishing a standard for bed making.
