The preheated feeds are reacted with H2O and less than the stoichiometric amounts of 0, in the combustion sector of the
reactor at 30-80 bar and 1200- 1500°C. No catalyst is used. The heat generated is used to steam reform the oil. Soot formed from a small portion of the oil is removed from the synthesis gas by washing with H,O or oil and is made into pellets. In 1986, the Shell gasification process was in operation in 140 syn gas plants.
