The royal palace was located here from the establishment of Ayutthaya in the reign of king Ramathibodi 1 to the reign of king
Samphraya .Later king Borommatrailokranat ordered a temple to be built on this site in 1448 to be utilized as a monastic
area.After the reign of king Barommaratrailokranat his son king Ramathibodi 2 ordered the construction of two pagodas. One ofthem was to house the remains of his father and order those of his brother,king Borommarachathirat 3 .Another pagoda was built by the order of king Borommarachanophuttangkun. It was similarly used to house royal remains those of king Ramathibodi 2.
In 1500 king Ramathibodi 2,commanded the casting of a standing Buddha image 16 meters height and covered with gold. This image Phra Buddha chao Si San phet was the main object of veneration in royal viharn . After that time the ashes of members of all royal family members and other the king were placed in small chedis consyructed at the site.
