A cow’s productivity depends heavily on how well
the animal responds to the management system. By
adopting a production strategy that manipulates the
animals’ experience of the ecosystem, the herder
exposes his animals to diverse natural environments
involving particular combinations of favourable and
unfavourable foraging and watering conditions.
Over the years, some cows prosper and produce a
numerous progeny while others die or struggle and
are sold. In this way, the WoDaaBe are able to harness
natural selection pressure for their breeding purposes.
