Heroes
You’re looking at heroes when you look at these men.
Look how they stand so tall and proud.
They fought so bravely in World War I
We salute their fierce courage, every one.
They are the 369th Infantry Regiment,
These Harlem fighters, back home from the war.
No white American would be their commander,
So they had to fight under French command.
Remember their faces, the Harlem fighters,
Wearing French uniforms, carrying French arms.
They are the 369th Infantry Regiment,
These Harlem fighters, back home from the war.
They stand in the sunlight, proud and tall,
But across their faces, shadows fall.
Was a black man treated the same as a white?
Or did they return to that same old fight?
They are the 369th Infantry Regiment,
These Harlem fighters, back home from the war.
