Barbey and colleagues wondered if emotional intelligence and IQ had any relationship. The team used emotional intelligence and general intelligence tests in their experiment. The participants consisted of 152 Vietnam veterans. As their IQ test scores went up, so did the measure of social abilities. Barbey and colleagues studied the brain scans from veterans. Some of the participants suffered from injuries in different parts of the brain. The researchers created a map of the brain, broken into small sections. The researchers compared the emotional and general test results between those with and without injuries for separate sections. Brain injuries in the frontal cortex and the parietal cortex had impairments in general and emotional intelligence. The frontal cortex plays a crucial role in regulating behaviour, planning and memory. The parietal cortex plays an important role in understanding language.
