13.1.1 Meaning of Green Infrastructure
Green infrastructure remains something of an elusive concept since its introduction in the United States (Benedict and McMahon 2006; Mazza et al. 2011). Depending upon the author, it is either described as a more eco-centric or more anthropocentric approach (Mell 2008). One of the strengths of the concept is that it can be used on different scales, varying from local storm-water management projects to transnational ecological networks. Here we discuss green infrastructure as a holistic urban green planning concept on the level of cities and city-regions.
