ACS include a spectrum of cardiac conditions which includes unstable angina, non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction and ST-elevation myocardial infarction and are the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest (NICE, 2010), with one in every four men and one in every six women dying from the disease (Burls et al., 2009). However mortality rates for ACS have fallen. The Department of Health commissioned a report on fatality rates of patients suffering AMI and states that deaths from cardiovascular disease fell by more than 23% between 1995/97 and 2000/02 (Burls et al., 2009). This reduction is accredited to the improvement in medical intervention for coronary disease (Capewell, 2000).
