The die is cast connotes a decision has been made and there is no way to change it. There will be no reversible act. The die is cast in the manner of a gamble where the dice are used. A decision is made with the expected results or outcomes to be gained from the action. And this is the most difficult part. Indeed, it could distinguish between a good leader or decision-maker from a bad leader. A decision made during a normal situation would certainly be easier than a decision made under an abnormal situation. But even in a situation where there are no other factors compelling a decision to be made in haste or as a force majeure, mistakes can still feature. Under a normal situation, a decision-making has to be upon the correct and adequate information or data. Apart from that the logic must be sound when the conclusion is made following the major premise and the minor premise. Illogical thinking and unsound reasoning will land the decision-maker in trouble. Consequently a good decision has to be based on an objective analysis of the situation, sound logic and having adequate data or information with a keen a priori thinking capacity.
But very often, a decision may be made by what is known as an unavoidable situation which cornered the decision-maker into making a decision in haste due to the time constraint or a force majeure of other nature. Sometimes the decision-making is done with inaccurate data or information leading to wrong judgment. The buildings at Muangthong Thani unoccupied testified to the wrong decision-making on the part of a seasoned business tycoon. The investment was banked upon the belief or the miscalculation that when Hong Kong was turned to China many people would leave and they would throng to Bangkok and hence the buildings were there waiting to be purchased. That was not the case. China allowed Hong Kong to remain the way it was or close to it for fifty years while many who wanted to leave moved to Canada to set up a mini Hong Kong in Vancouver. Wrong decision making can also come about because of wishful thinking. Here subjectivity can wreck havoc for a leader who has blind faith and refuses to see reality. Cases of such decision-makings abounded in human history.
But a mistake made by a businessman in his or her investment policy may have less damage than a decision-making by a public figure who made decisions on public policy. A wrong public policy may cause the downfall of the government but of more importance would be the damage to the society and the hardship for the people. Adolf Hitler staged a war which led to the defeat of Germany with millions of people losing their lives. That was a wrong decision, for good or for ill for Germany but for ill for the world at large. The most important decision-making is one which will have impact upon the society as a whole such as a decision regarding the political system. The change of one political system to another by force can either be a blessing for the country or can spell doom for the polity depending on the decision. But invariably it is always the innocent people who would stand to suffer. A good decision by a good leader who liberated the people from the poor plight would be lauded such as emancipation of slavery by Abraham Lincoln. But a change of regime by force by some dictators would only do harm to the people who have to endure persecution and maltreatment by the dictatorship. Decision-makings regarding a political system is thus most important and can have far-reaching consequences imaginable.
But there is a law governing the human society. That is the law of causality. What is done positively would have positive result now or later and the contrary is true. There exists also the law of balance. What is outlandish and totally out of balance will not last forever. Equilibrium will resume. There is something known as homeostatic equilibrium to bring the imbalance into balance by the equilibrating effect. The following poem portrays such a belief
