Hydrophilic additives, such as various alcohols and tertalkylmethyl
ethers are commonly used [1–5]. Oxygenated
organic compounds can be used as a fuel, but normally
they are proposed for use in a mixture with conventional
hydrocarbon fuels, thereby avoiding the need for any
major modification of engines using the fuels. For use in
mixtures with conventional fuels, the oxygenated organic
compounds should have a number of specific physical
and chemical characteristics such as total miscibility,
suitable volatility and, preferably, and low water solubility.
