In this study image analysis has been used to
measure various dimensions of particles. The term
image analysis refers to computer analysis of digi-
tal images. With image analysis measurements can
be accomplished thousands of times faster, more
accurate and with a better repeatability than with
manual techniques. The first image analysis tech-
niques were developed in the late sixties. Moore
(1968) organized the approach to image analysis
by computer and laid the basis for a relatively
rapid method of automated measurements. In the
early stage of development it was impossible to
save or freeze the images, measurements had to be
done ‘‘semi-manually’’ directly on the monitor.
Today, in contrast, images are saved in the comput-
er’s fast image memory and measured immediately.
Present technology also allows measurements of
very large amounts of data at the same time.
