Prospective and working memory
As we age, slight increases in episodic prospective memory
loss (e.g. occasionally forgetting to keep an appointment)
become more prevalent (Ba¨ckman et al. 2004, Guimond
et al. 2006). Kliegel and Ja¨ger (2006) examined prospective
and working memory among four age-groupings (n = 127),
separating older adults by 10-year groupings from age 60 to
91 years; the data derived were then compared to those from
a group of younger people ranging from age 22 to 31 years.
The results of Kliegel and Ja¨ ger’s research revealed a statistically
significant decline in prospective memory among the
older age groups, with a steady decrease noted between
groups as age increased. Interestingly, these researchers found
that through limiting demands on working memory and allowing participants to rehearse or focus, prospective
memory performance actually improved.
