(b) pupils who are functioning at Level 2 should be given much experience in discussing the properties
concerned. Rather than expecting pupils to follow rigorous and abstract proofs, allow pupils to
"discover" the properties in an experimental way.
(c) By getting pupils to constantly justify their reasoning, teachers can help pupils to progress towards
Level 3. Aim for higher order thinking skills such as classification, making inferences, problem
solving via analysis, working backwards, Synthesizing steps and so on.
Other Teaching Suggestions
(a) since the development of Geometry was for practical purposes, we can use real-life applications and historical computations in our teaching for motivation. There are many real applications in design , art, surveying, manufacturing, building and const action, etc
(b) The leaning of geometry often consists of memorizing and applying a collection of properties without any links. The essential meaning of a property is a constant result over a class of objects. Making links between various sets of geometrical objects via properties and definitions puts things in perspective and promotes deductive thinking and classification. Pupils can be taught to draw concept maps for summarizing what they have learnt.
