Ethyl acetate (40 ml) was added slowly to a 500 ml three-mouth
flask after reducing the temperature to 5 C. Chlorosulfuric acid
(6 ml) was added dropwise, and the solution was stirred constantly
at 5 C. To this mixture, 18 ml of lauryl alcohol dissolved in 20 ml of
ethyl acetate were added dropwise for 1 h and stirred for 1 h at 0–
5 C. Sixty mili litre of distiled water were then added to the reaction
mixture and stirred for 1 min. The product was extracted from
the mixture, using a separatory funnel for 1 h, until delamination
occurred. The ethyl acetate phase was in the upper layer, and the
water phase (which was discarded) was in the lower layer.
