In terms of the effect on incidence of opportunistic
infections in the infant we found a 69% lower incidence ofdiarrhoea in the breastfeeding compared to the formula
feeding group (P = 0.006) up to 14 weeks; this difference
was no longer significant at 6 or 9 months. There was no
incidence of hospital admissions in the breastfeeding
compared to the formula feeding group (P = 0.014) up to
14 weeks; this difference was no longer significant at 6 or
9 months.
