When talking about Thai sweets, one foreign lady deserves to be mentioned. She was the wife of Constantine Faulkon , the Portugese adviser to te court of King Narai (1656-1688A.D.) of the Ayudhya period. This lady introduced eggs into the basic ingredients of Thai sweets and,with this addition, a number of new sweets have come into existence. To mention a few, they are Foy Thong, Thong Yip,Thong Yod. Thong Muan, Thong Pup, etc. The egg-ingredient gives the golden colour to he sweets and therefore those sweets are called Thong which means gold. King Narai was so pleaded with her that he entitled her as Tao Thong Geep Ma.
