The Greek banking system is characterised by high concentration. Two major banks (the Na-tional Bank of Greece and the Commercial Bank of Greece) with around 600 branches control 70% of domestic deposits. Given the scale of
multibranch banking at present, the development of such a system to support management decision-making becomes of primary importance. The fact that retail banking is in an increasing state of flux places additional pressure on reviewing and evaluating branch networks. The optimum number of branches, their optimum location and the optimum mix of services each ofthem should provide are the three interrelated key issues that have to be properly addressed by
bank managers.
