VI individuals are an average of three years behind their peers in STEM subjects (Wagner, et al., 2003). This data supports the fact that less than five percent of people that work in STEM careers have a visual impairment. It is not clear why these students are so far behind in STEM subjects so early in their academic careers. However, it seems highly likely that a high dependence on visual elements in various STEM fields coupled with the lack of accessible images is partially responsible for this deficit.
