Location services: definition
Three main communities involved:
– GIS, geo-spatial
• “Services enhanced by the location of the mobile user based on a
geo-service infrastructure”
• Usually extension/combination of GIS and GPS location, with or
without real-time communication
– Telecommunications
• “A service that uses the location of the user to add value to the
mobile user experience”
• Usually associated to mobile data services (e.g. routing, POI search)
• Includes call forwarding, free call, televoting etc.
• Includes 112, 911 emergency calls
– Context aware computing
• “Services that adapt their behaviors based on the context of the
target”
• Smart phones, smart homes, smart cars, smart buildings,…
• LBS is a special case of context aware services
