Toward a definition
To summarize from this review of its evolution, physical education is now widely seen as a form of education enabling individuals to grow in mind and body through reliance on bodily movement or physical activity and reflection upon it and the development of social and health skills and awareness. It is not merely physical activity or training, for understanding and reflection are fundamental requirements. Accordingly, the following stipulative definition of physical education is presented here: enabling the individual to acquire the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to engage in physical activities (such as aquatics, athletics, fitness activities, games, and sports) supportive of various forms of development, including bodily, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual development. It is understood that such growth entails knowledge and understanding of these physical activities and their benefits for personal growth and enrichment. It is also understood that such growth further entails the development of lifelong dispositions of engaging in physical activity just as intellectual growth entails the continuing pursuit of knowledge and understanding and the associated habit of reflection. On a sometimes contentious point, while the definition does not exclude participation in elite or competitive sports, neither does it consider it a necessary element.
