The most outstanding independent classical scholar is the late Ven. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. He is considered to be the greatest Buddhist thinker of Thailand. His life can be seen as a spiritual search for true happiness in the modern world, a world in which life's conflicts are everywhere. He may be called the Guru of Thai nation. His academic contribution to Buddhis studies is less important than his role as the spiritual leader of Thai societies. Yet, even as a teacher of Buddhism, he is regarded as the most outstanding teacher teachings Buddha in a unique way different from the commentary of the Pitaka written by the great Indian Buddhist scholar, Buddhaghosa.
