Blonk et al. (1997) carried out a screening life cycle analysis of pork production in the Netherlands, including the processes: production of concentrated feed, production of housing, production of replacement gilts, production of piglets, fattening
of pigs, transport of slurry and transformation to pork in the slaughterhouse. Relative to the impacts associated with the whole of these processes, this preliminary study showed that the production of concentrated feed accounted for 57% of eutrophication, 47% of climate change, 28% of acidification and 64% of energy use.
