2014
As of Monday, 2 June 2014, the permanent Exhibition Space of the Bank’s Numismatic Collection has opened anew in Athens at 41, Panepistimiou Street.
The history of coinage, the first coin circulated around the end of the 7th/beginning of the 6th Century BC, as well as representative coins of the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Periods are presented in the Exhibition Space.
Separate showcases display:
-the coinage of Athens, the most important coinage of the ancient world;
-the two international coins of Antiquity, the Athenian “owls” and the Alexandrian tetradrachms;
-some rare issues from the Bank’s Collection;
-the coin of Aegina, the first coin to have been struck in Greece, from the reverse type of which derives the current Alpha Bank logo.
Explanatory texts, maps, and schematic representations give the opportunity to visitors to be familiarised with the history of coinage and to view the expansion of Greek civilisation through the coins. In addition, they can draw information on the ancient coin minting technique through replicas of ancient dies and “mint” a tetradrachm of Athens or of Alexander the Great on clay.
