Various governments have therefore employed a number of practices to encourage SME export activity. The Australian government in 2002 set out to double national exports and developed several programmes for achieving this goal, such as Export Market Development Grants. These programmes helped businesses, particularly SMEs, to cover some exporting costs. Subsequently, the number of Australian exporting companies increased from 25,000 to 32,000 (Snyder et al. 2012).
