3.4. Soil water content, temperature and pH
In the top soil layer (0–0.2 m), soil water content (SWC) in the B treatment was higher than the M treatment at 0 DAS and 40 DAS in 2009 and 2010, but was significantly lower than the M treatment from 40 to 130 DAS (Fig. 2, 0–0.2 m). In 2009, SWC in the B treatment was higher than the M treatment, but not significant in the 0.2–1.0 m soil layer. However, SWC in the B treatment was significantly lower than the M treatment in 2010 (Fig. 2, 0.2–1.0 m). The changing situation of SWC in the 0–1.0 m soil layer in 2009 was the same as the 0.2–1.0 m soil layer in 2010. In the 0–2.0 m soil layer, SWC in the B treatment was significantly lower than the M treatment in both years, more so in 2010 (Fig. 2, 0–2.0 m). Average soil temperature in the M treatment was higher than
in the B treatment in both years, but there was no significant difference between them. Soil pH did not differ between treatments early in the growing season, but in later growth periods, soil pH was significantly lower in the M treatment than the B treatment
(Fig. 3).
