Because March is Women's History Month, it is appropriate to consider how the past contributions of women have shaped the sport realm.Through history, we can learn from the past and enhance our understanding of the present state of sports.This editorial examines three historical concepts of women in sport and places them in the current cultural context.These historical concepts include "a sport for every girl, and a girl for every sport," the importance of looking and acting like a girl, and organizational support of women's sport. Excluding the sports of basketball and track and field, in which black American female athletes have excelled, or soft ball, in which Hispanic female athletes have excelled, non-white American women continue to be a minority in the world of sports.
