A major bomb explosion rocked Bangkok's downtown area of Ratchprasong last night, killing at least 12 people, in what the police chief described as a bomb attack the first major deadly violence following the May 2014 coup. The blasts were the fatal biggest attack in Bangkok.
The National Council for Peace and Order which has Prime Minister Prayut Chanocha as the chief last night met in an urgent meeting following the attacks.
At the time of the attack, the Ratchprasong and nearby Erawan Shrine were packed with motorists as well as worshippers and tourists. Unconfirmed reports claimed a foreigner was among the casualties.
