Over the past three seasons, key players Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa and Arda Turan have left the Spanish capital, while the likes of Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero and David De Gea, too, moved on to new pastures earlier in Simeone’s Atleti career. The Argentine, however, has not panicked in the wake of such departures nor struggled to sign their replacements. Upon Diego Costa’s departure, for example, Antoine Griezmann was quickly signed and has become an instant hit at the club. While much of their mastery in the transfer market can be credited to the work of those behind the scenes, what’s crucial is Simeone’s experience in challenging for major honours without the luxury of a £100m+ budget to fall back on, of which he has had few complaints, as Mourinho so often has done. Chelsea’s summer activity was minimal, suggesting that Abramovich is no longer as willing to provide a large transfer kitty. This may ward off a few of Europe’s leading managers; it’s unlikely, however, to be an issue for Simeone.
