Task Analysis:
1. Verify through interaction with the student and discussion with the primary caregiver(s) the specific items or activities from the materials section that are of significant value to the student. During any nonaggressive period, provide these items or activities to the student for enough occurrences that the student comes to realize that you and other people in his or her life are capable of offering and can provide this outcome.
2. Hold two meetings. Do not include the student in the first meeting, but meet with all persons who regularly interact with the student. The outcome of this meeting is to reach agreement upon what specifically and measurably defines the problem and what actions all parties will take when these behaviors are encountered. Consist. of response is the most important aspect in modifying this type of behavior. Include the student in the second meeting, explaining the concerns (if possible), that the consequence of aggressive behavior will be the removal or withdrawal of the desired activity (item), and that positive behavior will result in an increase in this activity or item.
3. Based on the student, past performance, select a period of time that is perceived to be one that the student can experience without aggressive outbursts. Ensure that the environment is as free as reasonable of distractive situations. Provide the items or activities that have been determined to be positive from Step I. 'fa 5-minute period of time occurs without aggressive behavior, provide some form of positive feedback (praise or something tangible that is valued by the student). If aggressive situations develop, remove or stop the positive activity and redirect the student, focus from the aggressive act to some other act such as a walk or a quiet moment in his or her room.
4. Continue Step 3, modifying the time period for positive feedback for positive behavior to 30 minutes. If problems occur, try to reach a 30-minute period incrementally.
5. Continue Step 3, modifying the time period to 2 hours. Gradually increase the time period in 2-hour increments until a 24-hour period occurs without an aggressive incident.
6. Ilse some form of chart that gives feedback to the student. Progressively set goals for days without aggressive behavior until the objective is met.
