Papaya Ringspot Virus is spread by contact and also by aphids (sucking insects). Once a papaya tree is in- fected, it cannot be cured. There- fore, it must be removed before the virus spreads to other papayas. If a tree is infected and has green fruit, these can be used for pickling. Be- fore planting, eliminate nearby wild papaya trees and ivy gourd, an inva- sive weed.
After handling infected trees, wash hands thoroughly with soap and wa- ter before handling other papaya plants.
Dagua Yellow papaya is tolerant to PRV and will produce fruit even if it becomes infected. You can get more information at the Plant Pathology Lab, University of Guam.
