Incursions by Danes (or Vikings) from around AD 800 were a threat to Anglo-Saxon civilization, but the processes of resisting and then compromising with the invaders were further significant factors in the development of England as a nation: not only did England from something like a modern navy and militia, but it also developed what was probably Europe's most well-organized government, with a system of shires and shire courts, military duties and tax obligations.
