Like all rainforests, many unusual animals live in the Congo Basin. The pygmy chimpanzee, for example, lives only in the Congo rainforests. The hippopotamus is another animal that can be found in the Congo rainforest, usually in the river. The people of Congo love to eat hippopotamus meat. Some of the hippopotamuses are killed for the food, even though it is illegal (not allowed by law). African elephants also live in the rainforest. They have long teeth called tusks that stick out from their sides of their mouths, made of ivory. Also, gorillas live in the rainforest of central Africa. The gorillas of the Congo rainforest are called "lowland gorillas". Another interesting animal in the Congo rainforest is the okapi. The okapi is a very interesting species; like a giraffe and a zebra.[1]
