Appeal to Pity
The fallacy of appeal to pity committed when pity is appealed to for the sake of getting a conclusion accepted.
Form:
If X occurs, then a pitiful consequence will follow.
Therefore, don’t allow X to occur.
Example:
If you fail me, then I’ll be kicked out of school.
Therefore, don’t fail me.
Although an appeal to pity may be persuasive, it is logically irrelevant to the merits of the conclusion. The question in the example is whether or not a student deserves to fail, not what will happen if he fails.
