As in the Prato textile industry, coordination requirements in the Swiss
watch industry have depended on the nature of the product. Watches are complex
products that contain between fifty and several hundred parts that must fit
and work together with extreme precision. Coordination of production involves
managing the design of the watch, the specification and fabrication of components,
watch assembly, and scheduling each part of the process. This gives
rise to a substantially more complex coordination task than that found in the
textile industry
