In Bodyguard of Lies, Clarke and Lexa are in Lexa's tent, waiting for the signal that tells them that Bellamy took care of the Acid Fog. Lexa is shown laying on her bed while Clarke is hovering over maps, worrying about the upcoming battle. Lexa tells her battle plans don't last long in battle and they can't move forward until the acid fog is disabled. She tells Clarke she's doing the same as she did when she first took command, over think things when you're not able to move forward. When Clarke expresses concern about Bellamy, wondering if she sent him in to die, Lexa shows some jealousy when she realizes Clarke cares for him. She says that sometimes you have to look into the eyes of your warriors and tell them to 'Go die for me.' She tells Clarke that she could be a leader her people look to, who they pour their hopes and dreams into, someone they will fight and die for. Clarke says she never asked for that, she's just trying to keep them alive, but Lexa tells her that she was born for this, same as her.
When Octavia confronts Clarke about knowing about the missile, Clarke assures Lexa that Octavia won't say anything. Lexa replies she can't be sure of that and that too many people know. Clarke tells her to worry about her people, she'll worry about her own and then walks off. Lexa stares after her before she turns to one of her guards and orders him to kill Octavia.
Clarke figured out what's happening and stops him before he can carry out the order. She drags him with her to Lexa and angrily confronts her about it. She tells her she can't just kill everyone she doesn't trust, but Lexa shrugs it off by claiming she can. She tells Clarke that she was willing to let her die two days ago herself and that nothing has changed, Clarke denies this and tells Lexa she she has, she can't do this anymore. Lexa claims that Clarke is too close to Octavia to be objective and that Octavia is a threat. Clarke argues that because she is close to her, she knows Octavia would never jeopardize the alliance and certainly not her own brother. Lexa asks if she's willing to risk everything based on her feelings and Clarke replies that she is. She says that Lexa claims having feelings makes her weak, but hiding from them is what makes Lexa weak. She says she may be a hypocrite herself but tells Lexa she's a liar. She backs Lexa up against the table while calling her out on having felt for Gustus, for still being haunted by Costia, that she hides behind this veil of having no feelings but that she sees right through her. Lexa is visibly shaken and hisses at Clarke to get out. Clarke isn't done and adds that 250 people died in that village and that she knows Lexa felt for them, but she let them burn. Lexa realizes that Clarke indeed can see right through her and shows her vulnerable side when she softly tells Clarke 'Not everyone. Not you.' Clarke realizes that Lexa just admitted to having feelings for her. She tells her that if she cares about her, to trust her as well, that Octavia is not a threat. Lexa answers that she can't do that, even though she clearly wants to and she has trouble saying it. Clarke then tells her she won't sacrifice her people anymore and that if Lexa makes any moves towards Octavia, she'll tell everyone she knew about the missile. After Clarke walks out, both girls need a moment to regain their composure, visibly affected by what just happened.
Clarke is seen entering Lexa's tent, where Lexa tells her Octavia has nothing to fear from her. She tells Clarke she does trust her. Clarke understands the significance of this and tells Lexa she knows how hard is for her. Lexa then tells Clarke that even though she may think their ways are harsh, this is how they survive. Clarke replies that maybe life should be about more than just surviving, that they deserve better than that. Lexa considers this while staring intently at Clarke and seems to make a decision and says 'Maybe we do.' She then leans in and kisses Clarke who, even though she wasn't expecting that, leans into the kiss herself, even putting her arm on Lexa's back as they both lose themselves for a moment. When Lexa goes in for another kiss however, Clarke pulls away. She tells her regretfully but honestly that she's not ready to be with anyone, disappointing Lexa in the process, but makes sure to add 'Not yet.' This softens Lexa up, she realizes Finn has only been dead for a very short time and the 'not yet' gives her hope for the future. Lexa nods in understanding, Clarke smiles at her, grateful she understands and that she is willing to give her time.
That's when they are interrupted by commotion outside, Bellamy was successful in disabling the acid fog. After Clarke whispers that Bellamy did it, Lexa tells her she was right to have faith in him. They share another look and Lexa tells her, 'Now we fight.' Clarke nods in agreement and they walk off to tell Lexa's army they are ready to go to war.
They are next seen walking side by side in the woods with the entire army behind them. They share another look, knowing they are walking into a war. When the army starts to scream in order to get pumped up, they share another one, but this time with a reassuring smile from Lexa, which Clarke returns. Two young leaders who care about each other, at the head of an army of warriors, about to go into battle.
