The predominant species of dermatophytes vary
according to their clinical localisation, as described
in the Clinical manifestations and global patterns of
superficial fungal infections sections and listed in
Table 1. The management of tinea of the glabrous
skin, caused by dermatophyte infections, is a common
therapeutic problem for dermatologists. However,
unlike pathogenic yeasts and non-dermatophytic
moulds, these infections never disseminate systemically
and therefore can never be lethal.
