Species of Cyanobacteria can
fix atmospheric N2 to a plantavailable
form, and the relatively low levels of nitrogen in
unfertilized soils may stimulate the proliferation of Cyanobacteria.
Meanwhile, elevated levels of nitrate in fertilized soils may explain
why the lower frequency of Nitrospirae sequences, contrasting
results were reported by Shen et al. (2010). However, they detected
that the application of inorganic fertilizer to wheat resulted in a
significant increase in the NH4
+-N and a decrease in the NO3
-N. In
this study, neither compost nor chemical fertilizer affected the
content of NH4
+-N, whereas they obviously increased the content
of NO3
-N.
