During recruitment, clear job descriptions provide job applicants with accurate information. For employees, a job description serves as a guide to work behavior. Well written job descriptions help employees direct their energies to the most important aspects of the job. For supervisors and managers, a job description serves as a guide to performance management. Job descriptions also serve as the basic building blocks for designing pay policies and training programs. In other words, job analysis provides the foundation upon which to build virtually all components of an integrated human resource management system. To meet all of these uses, a well written job description includes the elements listed Exhibit 5-5.
