the immediat post-Second World War years, that the style

beginning with the Lever House, New York by
Gordon Bunshaft of the firm Skidmore, Owings
and Merrill. However, there were those who judged even
Mies van der Rohe's masterly designs to have been sublime
failures. (Dr Farnsworth found her house far too expensive
to live in and tried. unsuccessfully, to sue the architect.) The critic Lewis Mumford probably spoke for many when
he wrote that:
