Deinotherium
Group Placental mammals
Date Middle Miocene to Late Pleistocene
Size 4.5m tall
Location Europe, Africa, Asia
Deinotherium was a relative of the mastodonts, with tusks that curved down and back from the front of the lower jaw. The purpose of its tusks is still controversial, but it is likely they were used for hooking onto branches to drag them down and make it easier to reach the leaves. Deinotherium was slightly larger than today’s Africa elephant, weighing about 14 tonnes, which make it the third-largest land mammal that ever lived.
