A total of 23,453 bird-dispersed seeds, from at least 64 plant species were collected from
the seed traps between July 1999 and September 2002. Significantly more seeds were collected
from beneath perches (19,798) than from control points (sites without perches) (3,655). The results
also indicated that species richness and numbers of bird-dispersed seeds were significantly higher
beneath perches than at control points for both sites. The effect of perches on seed input was
generally greatest where the height of the vegetation on the plots was less than the height of the
perches, and where the percentage of forest cover surrounding the plots was also high.
