In the presence of large unwanted weft floats different ‘engineering’
and ‘musical’ solutions can be applied.
The first one is related with the assessment of the way of transforming
the notes that are located on the lines of the staff. It is
possible the used transformation of the notes ‘down the line’ to
be disturbed for several notes and they to be moved ‘up the line’
and vice versa. Another possibility is to apply additional random
warp overlays, aimed at breaking the weft floats. Our personal
vision is that this might be done carefully; otherwise, the original
‘melody’ will be ‘destroyed’. However, the most important is the
final goal: to create a new weave pattern, which is of practical use;
so the notation could be used as a vague source of inspiration.
The third solution requires knowledge in both textile engineering
and music, as it is a musical one: the large weft floats
can be easily broken by cords. Therefore, the transformation of
a single note in a chord, which is in tune with the basic tone, will
require additional warp overlays to be marked in the weave diagram.
In musical pieces for piano both right and left hand notation
can be used as well; thus the appearance of a chord will be
of use for the pattern and the stability of the future woven fabric.
