Taraka, a wealthy fisherman, had two wives. His first wife, Kanitha, had a daughter named Euay and his second wife, Kanithee, had a daughter named Aye. Kanithee had always been envious of Kanitha as the first wife. Early one morning, Taraka went out fishing with Kanitha. After fishing all day, all they could catch was one golden goby fish. Kanitha felt pity for the goby fish and released it back into the water, which infuriated Taraka. In his rage, he picked up the oar and swung at her which caused her to fall into the water to her death. The circumstances of Kanitha’s death reached the Lord Phra Intra’s ear who decided that she would be reborn as a golden goby fish.
Without her mother, Euay was abused by Kanithee and Aye. They forced her to work day in and day out waiting on them. One evening after finishing her household chores, Euay went to sit by the pier and cried from missing her mother. It was at the pier that Euay met with her mother, Kanitha, reborn as the golden goby fish. Euay was overjoyed that her mother was once again with her and often brought rice for her mother at the pier. Kanithee later found out that Kanitha had been reborn as the golden goby fish. She told Aye to catch the fish and cook it for dinner that evening.
The next evening, Euay went to the pier with rice for her mother as usual but did not find the golden goby fish. She only saw the remains of fish scales all over the pier and knew that danger had come to her mother. Euay walked back home in grief and buried the golden fish scales that she had gathered from the pier. She prayed that her mother would be reborn as a golden bodhi tree. Through the strength of Euay’s prayers, Lord Phra Intra made Kanitha become a magnificent golden bodhi tree that shimmered in light.
One day, during an outing in the woods, King Prohmtat came across the golden bodhi tree and was intrigued by its appearance. He ordered his soldiers to move the great tree from its location so that it may be replanted in his royal gardens. Despite their force and their efforts, the tree could not be moved. King Prohmtat announced that anyone who was able to move the tree to the royal gardens would be well rewarded. No one could move the tree including Taraka, Kanithee, and Aye. Considering that her mother would be well taken care of in King Prohmtat’s palace, Euay asked her mother to allow the soldiers to move her to the royal gardens. The king was pleased and crowned Euay as his queen.
