The results fromFivelstad et al. (2004) indicated that pH in the range
5.4–6.8 does not affect growth or mortality in Atlantic salmon when Al
toxicity is reduced or eliminated by complexation with citrate. In the
present experiment, both the gill Al concentration and the concentration
of labile Al in the water were found to be low in all groups. Gill Al
concentration may be a more sensitive indicator for aluminium toxicity
than thewater chemical analysis (Kroglund et al., 2001a,b), and this parameter
was therefore used to control the effect of the citrate addition.
