Soil organic carbon and nitrogen were most strongly correlated with
understory biomass rather than litter biomass or ground cover
(Table 3). Litter biomass was much more closely correlated with understory
biomass than canopy openness (Table 4), and the combination of
openness and therefore less understory biomass and less surface cover
