Do you ever wish you had the power to travel in time? Go back and undo that little social misstep, or fix something so it turns out for the better? Tim can do that. The male in his family clench their fists in a dark room and can go back. Tim decides he's going to be all about love, instead of the other usual goal of wealth.
What would seem to be a basic rom com with a sci-fi angle turns out to be a very well made film about family and living your life to the fullest. There's a heavy usage of developed characters which seem real and human, and it makes for a very emotional and fulfilling journey. I especially liked Domhall Gleeson, who had this simple charm and great chemistry with Rachel McAdams. The film boasts an incredible support cast as well, who all chip in.
Carefully combining the genres of romance and science fiction, About Time is a beautiful film about love and life.
This is almost a romantic comedy, even though romance is only a small portion of the movie, and even then it's not done very interestingly. There's some tension, but it's mostly avoided because Tim can time travel. So the movie is a bit of a letdown. It's more about life in general than romance, and it's massively spoiled by how illogically the time travel element is dealt with. It's annoying, the rules make no sense, they just seem to get more and more complicated as the movie progresses. You realise that none of the time travel element is coherent and sensible, making the movie a mindless turd at its core. There are plenty of jokes, but when your focus is time travel, you need to handle it seriously. Not like this. This feels clueless. The whole movie is spoiled by dumb logic. There's no reason it couldn't have been better. With all these confusing rules about birth limits and death limits, I didn't enjoy it, it wasn't as straightforward and well done as 'Groundhog Day'. It wasn't deep or disturbing. There was no talk of being like God. No psychological effects of reliving the previous day or the effects of ageing. Or why Tim's family is gifted in the first place. This movie caters to the easy-going mass audience. I guess it's fairly stupid fun, it will entertain some people, but I was banging my head against the wall in frustration.
