King Charles II of Britain wanted the island. On his orders,the British took the city in 1664. The city received a new name New York. York is a city in England. Under British rule,the city is business grew. The population grew,too. By 1750,there were 16,000 people there. France also wanted this area. The two countries fought the French and Indian War between 1754 and 1763. After the war, New York was still British but not for long.
