As stressed in Chapter 6, the adult teacher should ask himself how well students can deal with books. Do they use the contents lists and indexes intelligently? Are they able to grasp the general argument of a book or chapter by reading through it quickly? Do they realise that different styles, treatment and subject matter demand differences in reading approach? For example, students may be discouraged in philosophy and technical subjects if they do not realise that tight argument and explanations demand more time and attention than narrative exposition.
