Pros:
Ability to service space telescopes, which certainly have enriched our picture of the cosmos.
Cons:
Realistically, no combination of future energy resources, will allow us to sustain present living arrangements (_just_ the oil-based-energy, in _just_ the U.S., is roughly equivalent to the mechanical energy used to construct 100 Great Pyramids _per day_; even the "alternatives" to fossil fuels are currently highly dependent on fossil fuel infrastructure, and are in any case not scalable sources of _net_ energy). In that context, even though the space program consumes only as small fraction of the world's total energy, it is still enormously energy intensive. The space shuttle program and manned space flight in general can hardly be justified, at a time when the world faces its own Apollo 13-like drama as it attempts to "return to Earth" with less than the expected supply of fuel.
