As in the case of conventional mining, much of the equipment and technology used in continuous mining at IMC Potash has been adapted from the coal industry. Since the first two continuous miners were justified by their ability to mine at lower heights than conventional equipment, face haulage equipment was also selected to meet this constraint. Chain-conveyor-type continuous haulage was chosen because of its advantage for lower mining heights. As larger, more robust continuous miners were selected to mine langbeinite ore, the concept of continuous haulage was carried over to the low-seam portion of the langbeinite reserves. Currently, there are five active continuous mining-continuous haulage sections.
